Clever Dog Hands Itself In At Police Station - Percys Pet Products

A clever Border Collie dog walked into a police station after becoming separated from her owners on a walk. Rosie was being walked by owners Steve and Julie Harper in Southfields Park, Loughborough, on 3 November, when she was startled by a firework and ran off. However, the resourceful pet then calmly took a seat in the local police station.

The moment that Rosie, a 10-year-old rescue dog, walked into Loughborough Police station was captured by CCTV footage, the BBC reports. Fortunately, the Harpers are responsible dog owners, and Rosie was wearing a collar with an ID tag which enabled police to track down her owners with no trouble.

Mrs Harper, 61, said: "She went and stood with her dad, which she does when she is nervous, and then skedaddled [when the firework went off]. She pushed herself through a hedge and handed herself in to the police station. The police station is right next to the park."

The Harpers were naturally distressed by the loss of their pet, and were relieved to be reunited with her so quickly. Mrs Harper added: "I was so pleased and so happy she was safe and so proud of her that she was clever enough to find her way to the police station."

Leicestershire Police said: "The pack at Loughborough Police Station made a new furry friend last week after a lost dog strolled into the station.”

They added: "Our staff fetched some water for Rosie, and made fast friends with plenty of fuss. Thankfully she was wearing a collar, so a lead was available to contact Rosie's owner, who was delighted she had been found safe and well. Rosie was being walked nearby with a second dog when she managed to wander off. What a lovely, clever dog."

Border Collies are regarded as one of the most intelligent dog breeds, who are easy to train and quick to learn. They have been bred for centuries as working dogs, primarily to herd flocks of sheep on hill farms. They are exceptionally lively as well as clever, with lots of energy and drive, and need plenty of exercise.

Watching a Border Collie at work as he herds sheep gives you some idea of just how smart and sensitive this breed of dog is. They use their natural instincts and athleticism to hone and control a flock, with intense eye contact, and maybe a nip and nudge here and there.

As well as a great work ethic which makes them a staple farm dog, Border Collies are popular with dog sports enthusiasts. They are a natural at dog agility courses because of their speed, cleverness, and sharp reactions, and are great at flyball, obedience, and of course, sheep dog trials.

Border Collies can make great pets, but they need to be well matched to an owner who is sensitive to their needs, and has plenty of time to exercise and train them.
